LG Chem's ASA material application in 5G antenna covers

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as of the first half of this year, China has accumulated over 400,000 5G base stations, and the number is growing at a rate of 15,000 new stations per week. Since 5G base stations are typically located outdoors, they are directly exposed to external factors such as heavy rain, snow, sandstorms, and solar radiation. Over time, this can easily lead to reduced antenna accuracy, shortened lifespan, and poor operational reliability. To ensure the normal operation of base stations, antenna radomes are an indispensable component. Antenna Radome An antenna radome is a structure designed to protect the antenna system from external environmental influences. In addition to possessing mechanical properties that enable it to withstand harsh external conditions, it must also have excellent electrical performance with good electromagnetic wave penetration characteristics. Because antennas are critical for signal transmission and reception, the strength of the signal directly affects communication quality. The presence of an antenna radome can cause some of the electromagnetic waves emitted by the antenna to be absorbed and reflected, thereby reducing the efficiency of signal transmission. Therefore, using materials with low dielectric constants is essential to ensure high wave-transmission capability of the radome. Moreover, compared to 4G base stations, 5G base stations have become 32% to 88% heavier. Thus, under the trend of 5G antenna integration, in order to avoid the need for crane installation and save on both installation time and costs, weight reduction has become the fundamental principle behind radome design. At the same time, as public awareness of environmental protection continues to grow, the use of eco-friendly radome materials has become inevitable. LG Chem’s ASA Boasts exceptional weather resistance. Antenna radomes made from this material remain resistant to discoloration even after prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and show minimal changes in physical properties and appearance under extreme weather conditions. Its dielectric constant ranges between 3.3 and 3.8, and can be reduced to as low as 3 after modification. It exhibits high wave-transmission rates in terms of electrical performance. Additionally, as a recyclable plastic, it combines lightweight characteristics with eco-friendliness. By bringing together so many advantages, it can truly be described as the “chosen one” among radome materials!
