It exhibits excellent processability. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is an opaque, white, wax-like material with a specific gravity lighter than water, ranging from 0.941 to 0.960. It is soft and tough, yet slightly harder than LDPE and possesses slightly greater elongation capability. HDPE is non-toxic and odorless. It is resistant to acids and alkalis, as well as organic solvents, and boasts excellent electrical insulation properties. Even at low temperatures, it retains a certain degree of toughness. Its mechanical strengths—such as surface hardness, tensile strength, and rigidity—are all higher than those of LDPE and comparable to those of PP; however, it is tougher than PP, though its surface finish is not as smooth as that of PP. It is used for extruding packaging films, ropes, woven bags, fishing nets, and water pipes; for injection molding low-grade daily-use articles and housings, non-load-bearing components, plastic crates, and turnover boxes; and for extrusion blow-molding containers, hollow products, and bottles.
