Fillers are a commonly used additive in plastic processing. Their primary functions are to increase the volume, reduce costs, and improve the utilization rate of the resin.
Since plastics are organic materials and fillers are primarily inorganic, the two are inherently incompatible. When plastics are mixed with fillers, a biphasic structure—consisting of a continuous phase and a dispersed phase—is formed. Consequently, the addition of fillers can alter the properties of the plastic. Generally speaking, plastics containing fillers exhibit greater rigidity and improved dimensional stability; however, their tensile strength and impact resistance tend to decrease. Some fillers can also enhance the wear resistance of plastics, impart flame retardancy to the material, and even provide coloration for plastic products.
Fillers are indispensable in plastic processing and are added in large quantities. Whether it's conventional plastics or new biodegradable plastics, fillers must be incorporated to modify their properties. The market demand is substantial, and many companies specializing in fillers have already gone public.
Advantages of talc powder
Talc powder is refined by grinding talc ore; its main component is hydrated magnesium silicate, with the chemical formula 3MgO•4SiO₂. 2 •H 2 O. Talc powder exhibits excellent chemical stability, is resistant to strong acids and strong bases, and also boasts superior electrical insulation properties and thermal resistance. As an outstanding functional raw material and filler, it can be used in plastics, rubber, and other fields.
Adding talc powder to polymers can enhance their rigidity, improve dimensional stability, prevent high-temperature creep in molded parts, and increase the number of cycles for mold reuse. Modified talc powder can also boost the tensile strength and impact resistance of plastic parts.
The addition of talc powder helps enhance the melt strength of plastic parts and can also serve as a viscosity regulator for the melt.
Talc powder boasts excellent insulating properties and is resistant to acids and alkalis; it is commonly used in the manufacture of acid- and alkali-resistant insulating products made from PVC, PP, PA, and ABS.
Talc powder has a relatively small particle size and can serve as a crystal nucleus, exhibiting a certain nucleation effect. Experiments show that when the addition level of talc powder is 1% or 5%, it can enhance the crystallization rate of PLA; however, when the addition level exceeds 10%, the crystallization rate will decrease.
Talc powder is white or pale yellow in color and has a refractive index similar to that of PVC; it can be used as a filler for light-colored and translucent plastic products.
Classification and Technical Specifications of Talc Powder
Talc is often classified and graded according to its intended use, including grades for plastics, rubber, coatings, papermaking, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cables, and ceramics, among others.
The main technical indicators of talc powder include: mesh size, whiteness, and loss on ignition.
Mesh Number: The mesh number refers to the number of openings per unit area on a sieve. The higher the mesh number, the smaller the particle size, and the more complex the required manufacturing process will be. With advances in technology, the mesh number of commercially produced talc powder has increased from 800 mesh to 5,000 mesh. Generally speaking, the smaller the particle size of talc powder, the better its reinforcing effect on plastics. In addition to controlling particle size, it’s also crucial to maintain a narrow particle-size distribution; if the particle-size distribution is too broad, it can negatively affect the reinforcing performance. Similar to calcium carbonate powder, when talc powder particles become very small, they require chemical surface treatment for modification.
Whiteness: The whiter the product, the higher its purity and the better its coloring effect. The whiteness of talc powder ranges from 75% to 95%, and the appropriate grade should be selected based on the requirements of different materials.
Loss on ignition: An indicator of talc powder purity, representing the mass loss of talc powder after impurities have been removed at high temperatures. Impurities such as metallic iron and heavy metals present in talc powder can affect the aging resistance and thermal stability of plastics. Generally, plastic processing is more suitable when using talc powder with a loss on ignition below 6.5%.
Applications of talc powder
Talc powder has a wide range of applications and can be used with the vast majority of plastics and other materials.
Used as a reinforcing and modifying filler in the chemical industry for applications such as rubber, plastics, and paints. Features: Enhances product shape stability, increases tensile strength, shear strength, flexural strength, and compressive strength; reduces deformation, elongation at break, and thermal expansion coefficient; exhibits high whiteness and excellent uniform particle size distribution.

Every departure is an opportunity to encounter even more breathtaking scenery; every journey together is a chance to forge deeper, warmer bonds. In 2025, Zhen Shun Plastics’ annual group tour arrived as scheduled. Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of work, we set off toward Changbai Mountain in Northeast China, drawn by our longing for its majestic mountains and rivers. During our four-day trip, we journeyed from the humid warmth of Lingnan to the crisp freshness of northern lands, stepping from the urban clamor into nature’s serene tranquility. Every leg of the journey was filled with surprises, and every moment was worth treasuring. First Stop: Changbai Mountain—Heavenly Lake Bestows Its True Beauty On the day of departure, the sunshine was just right, and our team began our journey to Heavenly Lake. Along the way, we were deeply captivated by the stunning scenery. As the altitude gradually rose, the distant Tian Shan mountain range came into view. The rolling hills, set against the blue sky, looked majestic and awe-inspiring. After much anticipation, we finally arrived at Heavenly Lake. What luck! It was our first time visiting Changbai Mountain, yet we were greeted with the sight of Heavenly Lake itself! The crystal-clear, deep-blue waters instantly amazed everyone present. Exclamations of wonder and cheers echoed through the air. Everyone rushed to get closer to this "peerless beauty," snapping photos to capture this unforgettable moment. The magic and beauty of nature always touch our hearts directly. Photos simply can’t convey the震撼 (shocking) power of the real scene—so it truly is said, “Seeing is believing.” You really have to see these sights with your own eyes. The blue sky, white clouds, mountains, and lakes—this very moment perfectly embodied the idea that “life is an open wilderness.” After admiring Heavenly Lake, we took another off-road vehicle back to the trailhead, then switched to an eco-friendly bus to reach the waterfall attraction. The Changbai Mountain Waterfall was truly spectacular—the water roared fiercely, its sound echoing for miles. It looked like a giant silver ribbon suspended high above the canyon. Whether viewed from afar or up close, the waterfall was breathtaking. Beneath the falls, the immense impact created swirling mist, making the scene absolutely magnificent. The river flowing down the waterfall ebbed and flowed, winding and twisting, stirring our senses. Second Stop: Guangdong Village—Stepping Into a Pastoral Poem of Korean Ethnic Charm As dusk approached, we arrived at a Korean ethnic village. The setting sun was gently coloring the land with a soft glow. Gray tiles and white walls turned orange, and the eaves were edged with gold—a scene straight out of a folk painting.
