Five thousand years may seem distant, but Shanxi feels so close. If you want to glimpse a thousand years of culture, look to Beijing; if you seek three thousand years of history, turn your gaze to Shaanxi; and if you’re curious about five thousand years of civilization, head straight to Shanxi. After paying homage to Mount Dongyue, let’s set off toward Mount Beiyue!
First stop: Hanging Temple and Mount Heng, the Northern Sacred Mountain.
From afar, the Hanging Temple looks like a series of exquisite reliefs, delicately and exquisitely inlaid into the sheer cliffs. Up close, it resembles an eagle spreading its wings, poised to take flight into the sky. The Hanging Temple was first built in the late Northern Wei Dynasty and has a history spanning over 1,400 years to this day. It was constructed by chiseling caves and inserting wooden beams into them, perched halfway up the slopes of Cuiping Peak, the second highest summit of Mount Hengshan. Leaning against steep, precipitous cliffs and overlooking a deep abyss below, legend has it that this deep valley was once a mighty river teeming with turbulent waves in ancient times.
Mount Heng, the Northern Peak
Mount Heng, located in the northern part of Taiyuan City, is one of China’s Five Great Mountains. Although, due to its geographical location and altitude, it doesn’t boast the lush vegetation found on other peaks, Mount Heng nonetheless boasts a profound cultural heritage. It’s a renowned scenic tourist destination in China—a national dual heritage site encompassing both natural and cultural treasures—and also the sacred birthplace of the mainstream Quanzhen School of Taoism, exuding a sense of grandeur and boldness.

Stop 2: Yanmen Pass, Qiao Family Courtyard
As one of China’s ancient frontier fortresses, Yanmen Pass is an important component of the Great Wall. During the Han and Tang dynasties, this site served as a key military stronghold, and today it still preserves numerous historical relics. Standing atop Yanmen Pass and gazing out at the surrounding mountains and vast plains, one can truly appreciate the grandeur and rugged beauty of the landscape. At the same time, Yanmen Pass is also a renowned cultural city, boasting a long history and a unique cultural heritage.
Qiao Family Courtyard
“The imperial palace is the Forbidden City; the common people’s home is Qiao’s Residence.” Located in Qiaobaocun Village, Qixian County, Qiao’s Grand Courtyard was first built in 1756 and stands as one of the most representative ancient architectural complexes from China’s Ming and Qing dynasties. Passed down through generations of the Qiao family, this grand courtyard boasts an enormous scale and an exquisitely refined layout, vividly reflecting the typical features of traditional Chinese feudal society. Wandering through Qiao’s Grand Courtyard feels like stepping into the daily life of an ancient aristocratic family, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia for one’s hometown.
Stop Three: Pingyao Ancient City
The ancient city of Pingyao, located in Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, was first established during the reign of King Xuan of Zhou and expanded in the third year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1370). It has a history of over 2,800 years. The city still retains, in relatively good condition, the basic architectural features of county towns from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is renowned as one of China’s best-preserved ancient cities and is also designated as a World Cultural Heritage site.
01 Night View of the Ancient City
At night, the ancient city of Pingyao is ablaze with dazzling, colorful lights. From afar, the ancient city towers, softly illuminated by the lights, seem even more tender and gentle against the night sky. Though shrouded in neon lights, the ancient city under the night’s glow doesn’t feel a hint of modern life; it remains steeped in its timeless charm. With its distinctive city walls and narrow alleyways, and pedestrians strolling back and forth dressed in traditional attire, one feels as if they’ve stepped right into another era.
02 Underground Money Lenders
In the ancient city of Pingyao, I got to see what China’s earliest money houses looked like. These money houses were actually the precursors to the famous “piao-hao” (banking firms). Primarily engaged in the exchange of cash and silver, they were an indispensable part of Shanxi’s Jinshang merchants. The Xietongqing Piao-hao, founded in the sixth year of the Xianfeng reign (1856), ceased operations in 1913 after a span of 58 years.
03 Pingyao County Government Office
After visiting the money exchange, head over to the Pingyao County Government Office to learn about the administrative functions of the government in those days, the life of the county magistrate, and the feudal hierarchical system. Then, take a stroll through the county magistrate’s backyard garden.
The Pingyao County Government Office is located in the heart of the ancient city of Pingyao. It was first built during the Northern Wei Dynasty and took its final form during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, boasting a history of over 600 years. As one of the four best-preserved ancient government offices still standing in China, the Pingyao County Government Office is also the largest county government office currently extant nationwide.

Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of work, we set off toward Changbai Mountain in Northeast China, drawn by our longing for its majestic mountains and rivers. During our four-day trip, we journeyed from the humid warmth of Lingnan to the crisp freshness of northern lands, stepping from the urban clamor into nature’s serene tranquility. Every leg of the journey was filled with surprises, and every moment was worth treasuring. First Stop: Changbai Mountain—Heavenly Lake Bestows Its True Beauty On the day of departure, the sunshine was just right, and our team began our journey to Heavenly Lake. Along the way, we were deeply captivated by the stunning scenery. As the altitude gradually rose, the distant Tian Shan mountain range came into view. The rolling hills, set against the blue sky, looked majestic and awe-inspiring. After much anticipation, we finally arrived at Heavenly Lake. What luck! It was our first time visiting Changbai Mountain, yet we were greeted with the sight of Heavenly Lake itself! The crystal-clear, deep-blue waters instantly amazed everyone present. Exclamations of wonder and cheers echoed through the air. Everyone rushed to get closer to this "peerless beauty," snapping photos to capture this unforgettable moment. The magic and beauty of nature always touch our hearts directly. Photos simply can’t convey the震撼 (shocking) power of the real scene—so it truly is said, “Seeing is believing.” You really have to see these sights with your own eyes. The blue sky, white clouds, mountains, and lakes—this very moment perfectly embodied the idea that “life is an open wilderness.” After admiring Heavenly Lake, we took another off-road vehicle back to the trailhead, then switched to an eco-friendly bus to reach the waterfall attraction. The Changbai Mountain Waterfall was truly spectacular—the water roared fiercely, its sound echoing for miles. It looked like a giant silver ribbon suspended high above the canyon. Whether viewed from afar or up close, the waterfall was breathtaking. Beneath the falls, the immense impact created swirling mist, making the scene absolutely magnificent. The river flowing down the waterfall ebbed and flowed, winding and twisting, stirring our senses. Second Stop: Guangdong Village—Stepping Into a Pastoral Poem of Korean Ethnic Charm As dusk approached, we arrived at a Korean ethnic village. The setting sun was gently coloring the land with a soft glow. Gray tiles and white walls turned orange, and the eaves were edged with gold—a scene straight out of a folk painting. We stepped into a local home, where the hosts warmly welcomed us and shared with us some of their local culinary customs. Third Stop: Tumen Border Crossing—A Glimpse of Two Countries at a Glance Tumen faces Namyang, North Korea, across the river. Though separated by just a single river, it feels like two entirely different worlds. Standing on the banks of the Tumen River and gazing across, we could clearly see the houses and streets of Namyang, North Korea. Scenes of daily life unfolded before our eyes through the binoculars. Listening to our guide share stories about the neighboring country’s customs and traditions, and watching the scenes across the river, we, as Chinese citizens, felt a strong sense of happiness and pride welling up inside us. We became even more grateful for our country’s peace and prosperity. Fourth Stop: Yanji—Folklore Park—Playing Princess of Yanji for a Day “You really must visit Yanji! Take a stroll in the evening breeze of the university town, put on an elegant long dress, and freeze time in the lantern-lit Folklore Park, becoming a princess of Yanji for a day.” Yanji, with its unique ethnic charm and immersive cultural experiences, has become a “fairytale city” in the hearts of countless tourists. From the snowy winter to the lush spring and summer, this place weaves a dreamlike journey through time with traditional costumes, lanterns, and a bowl of ginseng chicken soup. As our four-day trip in Northeast China drew to a close, we found ourselves immersed in the lantern-lit ambiance of Yanji’s Folklore Park. From the breathtaking azure of Heavenly Lake on Changbai Mountain to the misty spray from the waterfall dampening our clothes; from the warm smiles of Korean families in Guangdong Village bathed in the sunset, to the surge of patriotism we felt when gazing across the Tumen River at our neighbor country—each moment was like a sparkling pearl, strung together to form our cherished memories as the Zhen Shun Plastics family. This journey not only allowed us to take a break from the busy pace of work but also deepened our understanding of each other amidst the mountains and culture, strengthening our team spirit even further. Those moments—cheering together by Heavenly Lake, taking photos of each other in the Folklore Park, sharing delicious meals around the table—all will remain the warmest source of strength in our hearts.
